Commercial animal medications may be available in only one size or strength. We can create a preparation, which contains the most appropriate dosage for a specific animal. We make medicine much easier to administer and often more economical. We can compound numerous dosage forms that are just right for specific animals – from medicated chewable “treats” to liquid concentrates, from eardrops to dusting powders. The active ingredient can usually be administered by various routes (oral, trans-dermal, otic, etc.).
Applying a trans-dermal preparation to the inside of an animal’s ear or another hairless area is a quick and easy alternate route for systemic absorption. Trans-dermal delivery is particularly useful for animals that should not be stressed due to cardiovascular or hypertensive illness. Also, owners who no longer have to deal with an animal that resists being medicated appreciate it. We can also prepare topical medications for application at the site of inflammation or infection.
Advantages of Trans-dermal Dosage Forms:
- Medication is absorbed directly into the bloodstream without first entering the gastrointestinal system, thus a smaller amount of active ingredient may be required for therapeutic effect
- Direct application and absorption at the target site can mean higher tissue levels and lower blood levels of various medications. Side effects such as GI irritation can be eliminated.
- Various types of drug interactions may be avoided when one or more interacting medications are administered trans-dermally.
Manufacturers often stop producing medicines and dosage forms, which are unprofitable to market due to low demand. We can obtain the necessary pharmaceutical grade chemicals, and from them compound individualized dosage forms.
The ideal preparation may need to contain several ingredients to treat a variety of symptoms. For example, an animal with a skin infection may require an antibiotic to treat the infection, an anti-inflammatory for inflammation, and a pain reliever. Instead of using three separate products, which may be costly and cumbersome, we can compound the needed concentrations of all three medications into a single, easy-to-use preparation.
In addition to customized medications, we offer a variety of unique dispensing devices to simplify administration and improve compliance. For example, oral and topical syringes provide a simple means of accurately measuring and administering medication, and are particularly useful when the dose is fluctuating. Accordion-like puffers are ideal for applying powder to difficult-to-reach areas like the ear canal. A dauber bottle is excellent for topical application, such as painting medication on a hoof. We also compound polyox bandages. When moistened, this medicated preparation will adhere to a wound or mucosal surface, thereby providing a protective barrier and increasing the contact between the medication and the affected area; and it is difficult to lick off! |
